	Your website design is outdated. If your website feels old and outdated, your visitors may sense the same about you and the services you provide. Think about refreshing your website every 12-18 months; a design refresh is meant to liven up your brand, not to completely overhaul it. Think of your website like your house... whether it's a fresh coat of paint or new artwork, it breathes a little life into the potentially outdated look.
	You have a high visitor bounce rate. Bounce rate is percentage of visitors who enter the website then quickly leave instead of continuing to other pages with the website. Your website could be lacking either appeal or functionality. How long does it take your website to load? Large or unnecessary images, as well as poorly developed code, can cause your website speed to plummet -- causing visitor's to leave. Just as importantly, make sure they can access the most important information easily. Remember, too much information can be just as detrimental as not enough.
	People can't find you. The best way to quickly figure this one out is to objectively ask, "What do my visitors want and can they easily find my website?" Think about key words and phrases you associate with your company; don't over complicate it. For example, if you have a Des Moines-based moving company, focus more on using "Des Moines Iowa moving services" instead of "great relocation specialist" as keywords. You want to use phrases that most people would use while Googling to find a company such as yours.

If you've decided that your website needs some work, it's important to decide how much you want to invest in it. Are you ready for a complete website rebuild or are there only slight issues that can be handled with a fresh design? Variety Telethon's main public-facing functionality update exists within the navigation structure of the website. Variety focused on the main topics a website user would be most inclined to need and use: About, Donate, Learn More and Get Involved. This simple navigation update makes a world of difference to the end user as it clearly and quickly directs you to the information sought after. For example, when I am visiting a charity website I want to know who they are, what they do and how I can help. So WordPress is great - if you have a blog. For the past few years a new trend has been forming: using WordPress for larger and more complex websites. Website owners are using WordPress for something it wasn't designed to do.

Some developers are pushing their clients to use WordPress for their custom websites. There are even some plug-ins that attempt to make WordPress into an eCommerce platform (it is not). Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can be made more difficult for large sites running WordPress. The admin panel just wasn't designed to manage complex sites.

Unfortunately, forcing WordPress to do more than it should often lead developers to "hack" the tool - they're trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. These hacks can lead to higher development costs and later development becomes much more difficult.

But you want a large site with an easily managed CMS (Content Management System), right? Use the right tool for the job. 1) Label All Images
Labeling images will help those visually impaired as well as those with a slow internet connection. For those experiencing lagging internet speeds, images typically load last on the page. Image titles can "show" the website user whether the image is an important link or a placeholder image by using the alt tag, image title or image description field when placing an image. You will want to make your image titles as descriptive as possible, yet brief. You also want to place the most relevant information at the beginning of the image title for users to more quickly scan the page for pertinent information. For example, you'd want an image title connected to a request form to say "Request a Free Design Quote" instead of "Design Quote Image". The user will more easily know the image/link is a request form instead of an image advertising your design quotes.

2) Use Colors & Contrast Carefully
When designing your website, keep color selections and contrast in mind. Try to work in a monochromatic environment to start and test your design for effective contrast by printing the layout on a black and white printer. This will help not only those will color vision deficiencies but those using devices with non-color displays. Never use color alone to relay important information as there are many users with difficulties seeing the difference between colors such as green and red.

3) Label Form Fields Appropriately
Try to keep the reading order (used by screen readers) and visual order consistent. A screen reader will have difficulties matching fields with the appropriate labels if they are not marked as such. Think of a simple contact form where the label "First Name" is adjacent to the field where you would type your first name. As a screen reader approaches a form field with a <label> element corresponding to it, it will read the text within the <label> element and communicate this to the user. Without appropriate labels, the end user will most likely fill out the form incorrectly.

These basic techniques, if considered throughout the design and implementation process of a website, can help a larger audience navigate and experience your website as it was intended. Visionary Services, Inc. recently had the opportunity to work closely with Brad Basart, Sr. Publications Specialist at FIREHOUSE Software to develop their new website firehousesoftware.com. "Our site has long been much more than a marketing resource on the web; it has been a product and support resource for our clients", Brad commented.

The site redesign was prompted by the need for brand standardization and content management system upgrades. "Primarily, with the acquisition of our parent company, ACS, by Xerox Corporation in early 2010, we were provided a new scope for brand management. We collaborated with ACS and Xerox staff to blend our product brand signature in with theirs," Brad explained. "Secondly, the existing site management system was personally time consuming. The newly designed Site OnCall tools have given me the power to make changes to our site within minutes of being notified."

Visionary was able to build the tools FIREHOUSE needed to make necessary site updates on the spot. Ten years ago you were told if you didn’t have a website, you were missing a key opportunity to reach your clients. Today, a mobile web presence is equally as important. For purposes of this article, I will refer to a "mobile web presence" as a website designed specifically around smart phone technology and physical screen size.

The three major players in smart phones are iPhone, Android and Blackberry¹. With millions of these phones being sold each year, they are quickly becoming an indispensable tool for people to remain informed, organized and connected. Because of this, it’s important for you to rethink the avenues in which you provide information online.

A mobile website is not a replication of your existing site; instead, it’s a streamlined version of it.  You should place the most relevant and sought-after information on your mobile site. For example, if you own a restaurant you’ll want your mobile website to display your hours, menu and location. (Many smart phones will automatically provide navigation based on address making it much easier for customers to find you). While your full website may include pictures of your restaurant, a profile of the owner and other highlights, this content could distract or even frustrate your potential customer causing them to look elsewhere.

Before you get concerned over cost, this does not mean you automatically need to create two completely separate websites. If your existing website is built around a database structure (meaning the content of the site is saved in a database rather than hardcoded onto a page), then the mobile website can share that data. The key difference between a full site and a mobile site is the amount of content that a mobile site contains, which drives the end-user's navigation of the site.

The number of people using their phone to look up information such as directions, services provided and hours of operation are increasing at an exponential rate. Your mobile website can a vital resource to them and may become the determining factor when deciding between businesses.

Over the summer, Visionary Services (VSi) had the opportunity to work with FRK Architects + Engineers, a professional architectural – engineering firm located in West Des Moines, IA. Our client’s goal was to upgrade their current site and incorporate the company’s updated brand identity. Their new site features a more modern website design and layout, including ten rotating Homepage Banners that randomly display every time a user visits the home page. The homepage also features a scrolling News Widget that links to their internal news page.

The biggest upgrade VSi developed for FRK’s new site is not visible to site visitors. The company's featured project portfolio pages are now managed through one tool. Each featured project has an individual page that allows for the client to display up to six images, a pdf document, date completed, size, recognition and brief paragraph about the project. Earlier this year VSi launched the entirely re-built Des Moines Arts Festival website. Attracting thousands of visitors every year, the Salisbury House and Gardens is one of Central Iowa's historic treasures. The Salisbury House, located in Des Moines, IA, is a 42-room mansion built during the 1920s by women's cosmetics pioneer, Carl Weeks. Today, the mansion has been preserved and restored as a historic museum that is used as an educational and cultural resource, as well as a center for professional and social events.

Visionary Services, Inc. (VSi) worked with the staff at Salisbury House and Gardens to design a new website that would allow visitors to become a member, purchase events tickets and make donations all through one checkout process. Creating a streamlined checkout process was significant enhancement to the new site since users can now purchase multiple items without having to re-enter their information.

The Events and Ticket section was the largest and most complex component developed for the new Salisbury House and Gardens site. When an event is created the website administrator can select if the event is annual, public or private, with the option to setup reoccurrence intervals. The tool also allows for online payment and registration.

Originally I was with VSi for a little over 2 years. I took a small leave for 2 years and now I’m back!

What has your return to VSi been like?
During my short time away from VSi while I was working solely on an ecommerce website, I found that I was missing something in my career. My knowledge with technology and the business world was singled out and I felt this was limiting me. In coming back to the VSi family I have found a home with the Contract Development sites and Systems team. They are a great group of people with high enthusiasm and super work ethic. A great fit for me!

I’ve hit the ground running with the Dice team to help them communicate with their customers whether it be potential clients or job seekers. Each day we try to improve the quality of the work we do and streamline our processes at Dice. This creates a dynamic and exciting work environment!

What is your life like outside of work?
My life outside of work revolves heavily around family. I have brothers and sisters that all live relatively close, so traveling on weekends, family dinner outings, and gatherings are quite common in my weekly routine. I have also been accused of being somewhat of a movie freak. I’m in love with the technologies we have at hand with the dawn of movies being mailed to your door, picking them up in a colored box outside a store, or watching them on an internet enabled tv.

Visionary Services, Inc.(VSi), in collaboration with ZLRIGNITION, recently launched the new Iowa Public Radio (IPR) website. With an average of nearly 1,500 visitors each day, the IPR site provides a variety of resources to thousands of users each month.

The new site's design centers on IPR's three audio streams: News, Classical and Studio One. Each venue provides unique programming and content.

• News: Lists local and national news programming, including Talk of Iowa, The Exchange, Radio Field Trips and Weekend Edition, to name a few. The News landing page features top news stories and corresponding audio links.
• Classical: From Classical Music in the Afternoon to The Jazz Department or Symphonies of Iowa, the Classical stream offers a variety of local and national programming.
• Studio One: Blues and Folk music are just some of the music styles within the Studio One stream. IPR programs include Java Blend and The Folk Tree. Garrison Keillors' A Prairie Home Companion is an example of a national program featured within Studio One.

Each IPR program page showcases information about the program, radio host, upcoming shows and more. Users can listen to previous shows or click on the "Listen Now" links throughout the site to connect to live streaming of a show currently on air.

The nonprofit organization is based out of Miami, FL, and supports disadvantaged students from rural areas in Ecuador who are interested in pursuing advanced education. The program provides tuition, housing, tutoring and career counseling for academically qualified students who would otherwise be unable to continue their studies.

The Mindo Futures Bridge Program was established to offer qualified, need-based graduates of La Unidad Educativa Fiscomisional Tecnico Ecuador, UEFTE, a Catholic boarding school in Mindo, Ecuador, with an opportunity to obtain a college education.

Every summer the City of Des Moines welcomes some of the best visual artists from all over the country to the Des Moines Arts Festival. The annual festival features nearly two hundred artists using various mediums and attracts more than 200,000 visitors every year, making it one of Des Moines premier cultural events.

As an official sponsor of the Des Moines Arts Festival, Visionary Services (VSi) was happy to develop the new website. VSi re-built their entire website, including updated Site OnCall admin tools that allow the staff to easily maintain and update content.

In addition to their new user-friendly admin tools, the home page now features an eye catching rotating banner that link to interior pages. One of the key components on the festival's new website is the Artist Gallery. Users visiting the website can find an artist alphabetically, by year, or by medium. A sneak peek of their work, and quick links to an artist's email and website are also included.

As the three-day event draws closer, more details will be posted throughout the site. Whether Performing Arts, Live Music, Demonstrations, Street Theatre, Culinary Arts, Interactive Arts or the Community Outreach Program, the 2011 Des Moines Arts Festival offers a variety of events to entertain.

Let me give you an example of excellent customer service I recently received during a trip to the Omaha Zoo. When searching for a nearby pizza place to stop for lunch, I used an app on my phone to look up “Pizza” within a 5 mile radius of the zoo. Tip: if you’re a service-driven industry, this can be a valuable tool to have your business stand out. This particular app uses Yellow Page listings to sort businesses by industry, or category, then ranks them according to how much information is displayed in the listing. The search results included the standard pizza chains as well as locally-owned restaurants. We decided to try Orsi’s Italian Bakery and Pizzeria…just a few miles from the zoo.

When we stepped into the small, brick building filled with family photos dating back 40 years, I knew immediately we'd made the right decision. The friendly staff greeted us with warm smiles and free homemade cheese sticks. Not only was it the best pizza I’d had in years, the staff made the experience delightful and memorable.

This experience reminded me about the importance of simple customer service. Located in Central Iowa, Camp Fire USA Heart of the Hawkeye Council is a community-based non-profit organization that focuses on building caring, confident youth. In 2009, Visionary Services (VSi) worked with Camp Fire USA to create a newly designed website with upgraded content management tools. A year later, VSi and Camp Fire USA teamed up again for phase two of their website that included updates to Camp Fire USA’s online registration process.

VSi added the ability for the user to select more than one child per program or event organized by Camp Fire USA. Now a parent or guardian can add up to five children during the checkout process instead of reprocessing the registration sign-up for each child.

Another update VSi made to their registration process was the addition of à la carte options for specific programs. This new addition allows Camp Fire employees to better handle the registration process because the parent of guardian signing up for a program has the opportunity to add on specific activities during checkout. This allows for better planning for Camp Fire USA employees and those participating in the programs of all optional activities.

These updates highlight how businesses and organizations can continue making enhancements to their sites through phases. This helps both the client and VSi when planning future budgets and timelines. The goal of Search Neutrality is to prevent search engines from abusing their power. Search engines, Google in particular, have a large responsibility to ensure they are ranking websites in a fair way.

The recent network neutrality debates have overflowed into web search. The basic premise of network neutrality is that every website deserves the same level of network service (opponents argue for "fast" and "slow" lanes for websites based on what they are willing to pay for). This argument does not flow well into search engines.

Proponents of website "equality" argue that a search engine should not treat websites differently based on their content or other details. We disagree. We use Google and other search engines primarily because they do treat sites differently. The idea of search engine relevancy is based on treating sites differently; when I search for a specific term I want results that are relevant (why else would I use the search engine in the first place?)

Grimmelmann suggests treating all websites equally would force search results to become akin to the phone book ("even the phone book is not neutral in the sense of giving fully equal access ... as the proliferation of AA Locksmiths and Aabco Plumbers attests").

Search engines aren't wrong when they differentiate among websites, they are actually providing the service requested by their users.

Visionary Services (VSi) recently worked with ZLRIGNITION, a Des Moines area marketing firm, to develop the new 1-800 Bets Off website. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) Division of Behavioral Health established the 1-800 Bets Off program to "prevent and reduce the harm of problem gambling in Iowa."

The Bets Off site includes many important resources, including a self-test for users to evaluate their gambling behavior. While the test does not replace an evaluation with a trained professional, it does give users a sense of whether they may have a gambling problem. The results are auto-generated based on each user's answers to the test. Total statistics of all the previous tests taken to date are also available.

Another helpful online tool is the Myth/Fact Quiz. Users can test their knowledge on commonly misunderstood statements about gambling. VSi also built a Budget Wizard, an interactive tool where users select a game and the amount they would bet. Then, the Budget Wizard tool automatically calculates the 'house advantage.' The site also features a state-wide search tool that allows users to search for the nearest treatment providers by county.

While many of the tools listed above were available through the previous Bets Off site, VSi updated each of them, while creating several additional user-friendly admin tools through VSi's Site OnCall CMS solutions.

Since 1996, Juan O’Sullivan's Gourmet Salsa has been a staple at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market. Thousands of market goers sample and purchase the tasty products each season. Sean Sullivan, owner of Juan O’Sullivans Gourmet Salsa Co, wanted his website viewers to have the same experience the Des Moines Farmers Market patrons did.

Visionary Services, Inc. (VSi) helped Sean achieve his goal with a custom website design that brings the sights and sounds of the market to your web browser. The ‘Visit Juan at the Farmer’s Market’ section uses an interactive approach to FAQ’s by providing audio answers to the most common questions Sean is asked at his market booth.

The products section provides information on all varieties of salsas and sauces offered by Juan O’Sullivans, and the ‘Where to Buy’ section uses a map locator to guide users to all locations where Juan’s is available. If there aren’t any locations near, customers have the ability to purchase products online and have them shipped to their door. Back in the 1980s, Pop and Graffiti Art exploded onto the American art scene and soon began influencing everything from fashion design to interior design. Right in the middle of the Pop Art movement (led by names such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat) was a young artist named Angel Ortiz. Ortiz, aka LA II, figured prominently in some of the emerging styles making their way from the streets of New York City to gallery walls and art museums throughout the world.

In January 2010 Visionary Services, Inc. put their own website design work into helping LA II move into the internet age by creating the website la2graffiti.com. Built by the VSi Miami design team using the VSi Site OnCall content management system, the website design provides multiple tools to allow LA II to update text throughout the site as well as upload pictures of new artwork. Most of my time at VSi consists of laying out design creations alongside content management. I am usually the one to take care of any designs needed whether it be business cards, brochures or logos. Currently, I am working on a website called “Not Just Cakes By Patty”. This is a local Miami company that specialized in making custom cakes and sweets similar to some shows on television. This website’s intended purpose is to provide a modern but fun look for their new but rapidly growing business in Miami. They have modules such as latest news, questions & answers as well as a detailed gallery or all their specialties. The only downside about designing and creating websites like this is that it usually leaves you hungry at the end.

My biggest hobby of all is watching my favorite basketball team play, the Miami Heat. Other hobbies include going to the gym, hanging out with close friends and anything creative in general. I’m all about having fun.

Name one project you are currently working on and explain its intended purpose once complete.
I spend my time at VSi working primarily on our Contract Development sites and systems. Currently I am working with The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines to create a new web experience for their users. Because this client is eager to provide the very best user experience, there are many great possibilities for implementing new and exciting web technologies into their site and web presence. We will be working with new technology to add exciting dimensions to an already fantastic events center.

Share a favorite hobby or weekend activity.
I have quite a few hobbies, but my current favorites are painting, knitting and sewing. I love creating new projects in my spare time. I also spend a majority of my weekends curating an art gallery in downtown Des Moines.

VSi was challenged to create a new Content Management System (CMS) tool that would display images and information about current litters for sale. This custom tool allows the website administrator to upload images and information about the litter as a whole, and the mother and father individually. The user is also able to view each puppy in the litter and whether or not they are still available.

Visionary Services partnered with ZLRIGNITION, a Des Moines area marketing firm, to develop a new website for the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). Through their vision for a healthier Iowa, the IDPH formed Iowa e-Health to encourage consumers, health care providers, insurers, state government, and health care purchasers to establish an exchange of electronic health information.

According to the IDPH, this exchange of electronic information will greatly improve the state of Iowa health care by ensuring patient safety and increasing the efficiency in health care delivery. With accurate, up-to-date electronic records, doctors can save precious time, diagnose more accurately and provide better health care.

Because the website's focus centered on two central audiences — the general public and health care providers — the website needed to be carefully developed to allow some information to be replicated in both sections while other key sections contained audience-specific content. In addition, a custom banner manager was developed to allow the client to post different videos and photos in the right column throughout different sections of the site. As always, VSi's goal is to develop user-friendly admin tools that give the client the most flexibility for managing a website.

While this may be true, Google has no legal responsibility towards these companies that for years have received heaps of free web traffic courtesy of Google. Google isn't in existence to support websites, but rather to help searchers find what they are looking for. If I search for "Des Moines Pizza" I like to see a list of local pizza shops and a map showing me the closest location and how to get there. I don't particularly care about seeing Domino's listed at the top just because it's a large company.

These large corporations — companies like Trip Advisor, WebMD, and Yelp.com — are whining about lost traffic. Rather than figure out how to best use Google's newest tools, they would rather just make a fuss.

A recent article on Marketing Pilgrim does a very good job of highlighting why this approach is like a toddler kicking and screaming because they didn't get the toy they wanted at the store. Take a quick look and let us know what you think.

1. Acquisition of Diligent IS
   In the month of July, VSi acquired Diligent Information Systems, a website design, development and hosting firm in Des Moines, IA. VSi is pleased to have successfully sustained nearly all of Diligent's former clients and numerous vendor relationships. 
2. Continued Client Relationships
   VSi was able to continue working on great projects for our long time customers at FedEx, Iowa Realty, and First Realty Homes. We are always thankful for these clients and appreciate the opportunity to serve them for another year. We were also happy to have met some great new customers this year through our sales efforts in Des Moines and Miami and through our acquisition of Diligent Information Systems.  
3. New CMS Tool Ideas
   VSi continued to improve our Content Management System (CMS) Site OnCall throughout 2010. Along with our standard tool set, in 2010 VSi developed a new version of our language management system to allow both English and Spanish content in the same CMS website. Working with the new tools, VSi Miami saw an increase in providing Spanish translation services to assist companies in generating their bilingual site content.
4. Expansion of the VSi team
   Visionary Services is blessed with great employees and we're happy to have been able to add six new full-time employees throughout 2010. The new team members have made an immediate impact in 2010 and we are looking forward to the contributions they will bring the team in 2011.
5. Visionary Baby Boom
   Our employees welcomed six babies into the world: one boy and five girls, including a set of twins! And we have another employee expecting in early January.

The new website includes an events calendar for home buyer education and real estate seminars that includes an option for users to register online. In addition, properties that NFC sells are now listed on the website, and allows a user to view photos and detailed descriptions about each listing.

NFC's focus on neighborhoods was captured through a series of rotating banner graphics at the top of the site. This  enhancement is both visually appealing and serves to showcase the various neighborhoods NFC serves.

Over the past three years, Laine has been instrumental in VSi’s growth into the small and medium sized website market. In 2007 VSi’s contract development team hosted a little under 50 websites. In addition to changing the look/feel of the site, VSi will integrate new admin tools to allow for easy content management. Jon originally needed a site that would allow him easily publicize his issues and political platform. This fall, VSi added a News and YouTube video module to his website which allows the campaign to post timely, relevant press releases and announcements to the site.

How long have you been with VSi? 9 months 

Name one project you are currently working on and explain its intended purpose once complete. 
Currently I’m working on the Iowa Public Radio (IPR) new website. One goal for this website is to provide an updated look and feel from their old site. We are working together with ZLRIGNITION to integrate their design concepts into a new web system. We are also developing tools for IPR to easily maintain the site for their programs, staying up-to-date with the DJ’s info and events hosted by IPR. The new Iowa Public Radio site will be much more user-friendly and interactive. I am very excited to work on this project and can’t wait to see how well this new website will work for them.

Share a favorite hobby or weekend activity. 
I spend most of my free time rowing/coxing (yelling out commands to steer the boat) 2 or 3 times a week for the Des Moines Rowing Club. It’s very relaxing rowing down the Des Moines River while enjoying the great scenery. I have also recently joined the Downtown Kosama workout program (along with 5 other coworkers), and we are currently on week 8 of 10. They push us pretty hard, but I enjoy the workout and have already signed up for their six month alumni program.

For over 20 years they have assisted numerous brides find their dream gown. They have dressed the most beautiful brides from Florida, United States, Latin America, and The Caribbean and all over the world.

After announcing their recent expansion just steps away from their current location to 34 Miracle Mile, Leggenda also wanted to expand their existing website. Originally designed by CompuWizards, and proud to be responsible for its makeover almost five years later.

The site features a custom and elegant graphic design, animated photo galleries, and a bilingual setting. Despite the custom look, a content management system has been implemented to allow Leggenda to modify text in all sections.
